Learning Some Hukilau Hula Dance

Keeping with a beach theme, we are doing a little hula dance in music.  The Seals, Elephants, All-Stars, Monkeys, Zebras, and Giraffes are learning how to do some hip shaking hula to “Hukilau” by Jack Owens.

Zebras Hukilau DanceStudents choose a color scarf to tie around their waist to be their skirt.  We started the dance by swaying our hips from side to side, and adding our arms with the movement if able to do so.  With our arms, we were the ocean waves by going up and down in a curve.  We become a fish by putting our hands together and swimming in front of our bodies.  In addition, we opened our arms above our heads to be the sun on the beautiful beach.

The students enjoyed hearing the music and L. Zebras commented, “It sounds like ‘Spongebob’ music from under the sea.”  Listening to the music, students did their best to isolate their hip movements, followed my directions of how we were dancing, and tried something new.  We danced together, sometimes walking and swaying our hips together.  It is a tropical dance party!
