Numbers With “Ten Little Turkeys”

I put a tune to the poem of “Ten Little Turkeys” and gave a turkey to each student to have a place in the song.  The turkeys were given randomly and students either recognized the number themselves or had teacher assistance.  For elementary classes, I had each student tell the class their number.

When I sang the song, the student with the turkey that ran off placed their turkey in the middle of the rug.  Depending on the class level, I added the numbered turkey that ran off to help students know it was their turn (ex. Turkey number 10 ran out of line, Turkey number 9 ran out the gate).

At the end of the verse, I paused to let students fill in the number of turkeys left.  In every class, there were several students were excited to give the answer.  They did it through the rhyme of the word (line, nine), looking at the group and counting how many turkeys were left, or counting backwards.  For some classes, I held up the 10 fingers, put one finger down, and asked how many were left to help them with counting backward.

By the end of the song, most of the students were singing along and having fun counting their turkeys!

Ten little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey ran out of line,
When he was gone, there were nine.

Nine little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey ran out the gate,
When he was gone, there were eight.

Eight little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey flew to heaven,
When he was gone, there were seven.

Seven little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey played with the chicks,
When he was gone, there were six.

Six little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey took a dive,
When he was gone, there were five.

Five little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey ran out the door,
When he was gone, there were four.

Four little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey ran up a tree
When he was gone, there were three.

Three little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey away he flew,
When he was gone, there were two.

Two little turkeys sat in their pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey went for a run,
When he was gone, there were one.

One little turkey sat in his pens
“Hide, turkeys, hide!” said the little red hen.
One little turkey flew to the sun,
When he was gone, there were none.
