As we head into the last week of Camp Acorn at The Parish School, I am saying good-bye to students who are only here for the summer camp: siblings and students of staff members. Today started off the good-bye to the Turtles, Sunrays, and Pandas. W e had lots of fun in our last music class together this summer.
The Turtles explored the guitar, keyboard, and drums. After trying out each instrument, they picked their favorite one and one Turtle suggested that we create a band. So we did! Calling themselves “Fresh Beat,” they took turns being the lead singer and switching instruments. Students sang “ABC,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” and “Jingle Bells.” They listened to each other, playing the rhythm of the words or keeping a steady beat. Sometimes they sang along together. It was sweet to see how these individual students who did not know each other four weeks ago come together through music. They supported each other and encouraged each to play. They are ready to tour!
The Sunrays had an open mic morning. Students have really enjoyed singing our songs into the microphone and I decided that for our last class together, the students will have an open mic morning and sing anything they wish. We heard the “ABC,” “Twinkle, Twinkle,” and “Magic Shoes.” Magic Shoes is an activity that I sing and we do different movements around the room. I was very impressed that one Sunray who loves “Magic Shoes,” sang the entire song. It was so nice to see that the song had such a big impact on her camp experience. Students clapped for one another and were happy for their friends. This is a group of emerging talent!
The Pandas enjoyed a microphone experience as well, making funny noises and singing bits of their favorite nursery rhymes. They were all smiles in hearing their voice amplified and were proud of the words they were singing and saying. For these two-year old students, they loved holding the microphone in of itself. They listened to each other and were not shy about having a turn. These students are stars!
I have had a wonderful time with the day camp students and appreciate all the music we have shared. We have formed friendships,, taking in new singing/dancing/instrument experiences, and in each class we shared our favorite musical moments together; there have been so many! Thank you! 🙂
