“I am the beluga police.” “I am a beluga ballerina.” “I am baby beluga.” –Kangaroos
“Let’s go to sleep.” “I’m a shark beluga.” –All-Stars
After reading and singing the “Baby Beluga” story, preschool classes are dancing with scarves to the “Baby Beluga” music. We use the scarf as a fin, water sprout (see picture), blanket, and water and actions in between. With me on the piano, I stretch the music for specific parts to give the students the opportunity to dance, especially “heaven above” with high notes and “sea below” with low notes. Students enjoy the sleeping baby beluga part the most. It is a great time for students to rest and listen to the lullaby of baby beluga. They use the scarf as a blanket and lay quietly on the floor.
The students have become quite creative in our dance activities as you can tell from the above quotes. Students like to elaborate or bring in their ideas and previous activities to our current activity. We had a variety of beluga whales and the students shared in each other’s actions.
