“What I Am”: Upper Elementary Musical

Each spring, the upper elementary students act, dance, and sing in an original scripted musical directed by the music teacher (that’s me!), drama teacher, and the art teacher.  My first experience of writing a musical to this magnitude, it has been eye-opening to watch our collaboration unfold and a written script gradually form in front of us.  All the classes have started working on their class song and the finale.

I want to share that students have fallen in love with the finale song: “What I Am” by Will.I.Am.  They are moving to the beat, dancing, and singing along with a smile.  The message of the song is to be who you are, never give up, and to believe in yourself.  Many of the students tell me, “That’s a cool song.”  “I really like it.”  “Let’s sing with Elmo!”  The song was on Sesame Street and that is a nice buy-in for some students who love Sesame Street.  Listen to the song with your students and mark your calendars for our Upper Elementary Musical on Thursday, May 10th at 7:00pm at St. Pius in Houston, TX.
