“It’s hot!” Under the bright sun, the Parish School Choir sang at the Mighty Oak Bash (MOB). MOB is our alumni picnic, celebrating current and past staff and students with festivities. There were clown painting faces and with temporary tattoo options. Many students loved having art on their hands and faces. Students were also teeing off at a golf hole while some others were painting. The bounce house was a favorite of students. Parents cooked on the grill for everyone while live band music filled the air.
My first alumni picnic, I enjoyed hearing stories of alumni students and meeting several of them. So many people were reconnecting and reminiscing about their time at The Parish School.
For the choir, this was our first performance outdoors and wearing our white button down choir shirts together. United in dress, we stood in front of the Billie Ledbetter Orchestra and blended our voices across the light breeze. First, we sang “Best Friends” with piano accompaniment. For the occasion of friendships, students definitely belted out the song and had fun singing with a smile about their friends.
Next, we sang with the singers of the Billie Ledbetter Orchestra on “Sentimental Journey.” Boy did they have a blast singing and dancing to the music! Their favorite part to sing and was also the loudest, was “Seven, that’s the time we leave at seven.” Over the past couple of months, students have learned about this style of music and have enjoyed the swing of the music. Feet were tapping, bodies were swaying, and hands were waving to the music.
To end, we sang “Auld Lang Syne” with piano chords and then the band took the song away at a quick tempo. Students were free to listen and dance and there were many students who grooved to the music. I was impressed by several students at their creative dance moves and how comfortable they felt to dance in front of a large audience. It was truly so much fun and I am proud of how all the students sang with their hearts, listened to the music around them, and danced with expression.
