“It’s Leap Day: 1, 2, 3, and Leap Over 4.”

Today is February 29th, a special day that comes every four years. In music we celebrated by playing “Leap Frog Numbers”.  In this activity, paper plates labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4, are placed around our music circle.  Wearing a frog visor, students stand in front of the “1” plate and wait for the chanted instructions.

It’s leap day. It’s leap day.
Let’s walk
1 , 2, 3
And leap (hop) over 4.
1, 2, 3
And leap (hop) over 4.
1, 2, 3
And leap (hop) over 4.

During my demonstration, I walked on “1,” “2,” and “3” plates and did a small hop over “4” plate.  The Kangaroos told me I had to squat down and hop like a frog.  Not to their frog satisfaction, the Kangaroos enjoyed telling me to get lower, jump higher with feet tucked in, and eat some flies.  When it was their turn, they had some difficulties hopping with two feet.  The coordination of putting legs together, preparing the hop, and actual hopping needs practice.  Many Kangaroos and All-Stars walked over the numbered plates independently and needed a teacher help them “jump” over “4” plate.  The Labs and Fireflies really enjoyed walking and hopping to the rhythmic chant.  They wanted to do it again!  It helped some students get their sillies out and work hard at transitioning from walking to hopping.

In this Leap Frog Numbers, students work on counting numbers, jumping with two feet skills, and listening to the chant directions.  In all the classes, most students had the most trouble with waiting and listening to the directions.  Many of them wanted to walk and jump at their own pace and not with the chant directions.  While four students were jumping, the rest of the class were saying the chant with me.  They enjoyed saying, “1, 2, 3, and hop over 4.”  Even after our activity was over, they were saying the chant to themselves as their walked out of music.  We had a hopping good time celebrating Leap Year!
