Parish Lion Dancers

I am so excited to share that L. Heroes’ mother informed me that she had a lion head and books on Chinese New Year and China for the ICATs to borrow.  With the new books on my bookshelf and a lion head to show to students, we are even more hands-on in experiencing Chinese culture!  Thank you!

After watching the lion dance videos, students have expressed wanting to do it and be part of the head or the tail.  In the videos, we saw the specialized tricks of the lion and the teamwork it takes to coordinate a lion to dance.  All the students have been so enthralled with the child size lion head and cannot wait to dance under it.  Students learned to take turns being the head and the tail with their classmates.  The students are very gentle with the fragile head, walking carefully, and moving together.   There are a few students who take the power of the lion and move with dancing feet and legs.  In the video, we watched the lion dance on poles and hop along.  D. Fireflies had the idea to hop along on paper plates (see below).  The roars of the lion brings students together as a class and strengthen their bond.  Together, we scare away the bad and bring in good!
