Plates: Let’s Move, Let’s Groove!

The Dragonflies and All-Stars had a “plate-ful” day in Creative Movement.  Using their plates as steering wheels, dance stops, houses, and pillows, they danced and moved their bodies.  The most difficult of all the activities was dancing and stopping on a plate because it was an extra step after stopping to the music.  Also, some wanted to do plate skating like we did in December.  Many of the students are doing really well in controlling their impulsiveness and developing coordination to follow stop and go musical cues.

I decided to try something new with this age level and see how they do.  The “Cha Cha Slide” gives clear instructions with rhythmic timing to complete the dance moves.  Many of the All-Stars (four and five-year old students) successfully danced to the “Cha Cha Slide!” They faced one direction the entire time, imitating my movements, listening to the lyrics, and following my calls of the moves.  I was quite impressed with their attention and focus doing each movement through the entire song!  The greatest to watch was the cha-cha parts where the students wiggled their hips and moved their arms back and forth.  We have future dancers on our hands!
