Today is the first day back to school in the year 2012! Getting back into the swing of routines and expectations, students and teachers alike are easing back into the familiar Parish School setting. This week in music, all classes are celebrating the new year by working on singing “2 – 0 – 1 – 2, Two Thousand and Twelve is Here!” The preschool students are working on recognizing and saying the individual numbers 2, 0, and 1, while elementary students are counting backwards from 10 in the countdown to saying “Happy New Year!” Also for elementary students, we talked and sang about the 12 months, 52 weeks, and 366 days in the year 2012 because it is a leap year.
The Mustangs finished their Mad Libs, focusing on nouns and verbs. Taking the song, “You Are My Sunshine,” they determined a word that fit the description and silliness was allowed. Each student performed their song or I sang it with them, accompanying on guitar. They loved sharing their creation with their friends and continued singing and reading it while they decorated and drew pictures to their song. Lots of laughter erupted as some of the songs were so funny!
The Heros experienced their first drum circle today. Today’s drum circle’s goals were to be a leader and a follower. Through both roles, each student worked on creativity, self-confidence, self-expression, and impulse control. We shared rhythms and all became in tune with the music inside each other and ourselves. By the end of the drum circle, we developed a group mentality and our group consciousness. Each student had their brains thinking about being great listeners, following the musical cues and nonverbal cues of each new group leader. A. Heros was creative in changing the location of playing the instrument, left, right, high, low, under, behind, and above. M. Heros utilized the power of speech and had us echoing his words. The Heros expressed their like for utilizing instruments in a “Simon Says” fashion and look forward to more in the future!
