High Energy: Stretch Band and Animals

Holiday Party Season!
Each class had their holiday party celebrations and we also celebrated the winter/holiday season in music.

The DucksDragonflies, and Owls loved pulling and pushing the red stretch band to “Jingle Bells.”  With all the sugar and high spirits, the students were full of energy and wanted to run around.  By getting some resistance they needed from the red band, including jumping in the middle, around it, and getting to shake it every which way, they became more focused and calm.

The Wranglers and Owls worked on being a karate master during Martial Arts.  Our animal play was one of the highlight today.  One student asked why we pretend to be animals.  I shared that to be a karate master, one has to understand all the different ways an animal can move and imitate them.  It is not a race to see who can get to the finish line first, it is about doing the best animal movements.  At the initial sessions, I called out animals of bears, tigers, frogs, and dragons.  Today, the students chose animals and they picked: wolves, armadillo, bears, cheetahs, frogs, tigers, and elephants.  Students internalized the animal’s movements, especially working on being sneaky and slow.

Last day of music class for December 2011!
