“1-2-3 It’s-a” Holiday of Music

With the Winter Sing-A-Long approaching next Friday, the Parish Choir is quickly learning and memorizing our finale, “A Holiday of Music.”  One student informed us that her sister is singing this song at her school while a student’s sister happily recognized the tune and said she sang it last year.  This sure is a popular song selection from “Music K-8.”

The Heros, Mustangs, Labs, and Owls absolutely love singing the song because of the ease of the melody, the lyrics, and the jubilant piano accompaniment.  This song has a new road map for them with repeating the A section in a new key and then singing the tag.  We sang the entire song without looking at the words today and they sang a majority of the lines correctly.  The sound is so positive and happy that it warms the heart!   Through all the words and memorization, we continue to work on rhythm.  We are working hard on singing, “It’s a” which starts on the fourth beat of the measure as a pick up.  It also happens after a half note and goes into the pick up.  Mitch, the pianist and I are saying, “1-2-3, It’s a” to remind them to sing it and when to come in.

The Choir is also singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” and I recently realized that the students and I know two versions of the “Good tidings” part as we were singing it.  These are the two versions:
“Good tidings we bring to you and you kin;
good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
“Good tidings to you, where-ever you are,
good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
So we took a vote on which version the student knew, some voted twice, and the majority decided we are singing the first version.

I sent home the lyrics so students may practice at home or with their parents last week and students told me today that they have been singing it at home!  It is great to hear that they can continue their music learning at home and share it with parents.  Happy practicing!
